21 Random Questions for Hailee Steinfeld

If you haven’t gotten Hailee Steinfeld‘s new song, “Starving,” stuck in your head at some point this summer, you must be some kind of wizard. The 19-year-old’s second act as a pop star is going impressively well—she’s touring with Meghan Trainor this summer, performed on “Late Night with Seth Myers” last week, and is making good on the success of her first hit single, “Love Myself.”

Not that any of that has stopped her from pursuing other (occasionally Oscar-nomination-worthy) hobbies like acting and fashion. Her newest movie, “The Edge of Seventeen,” will be released in November, and on Friday, she stepped out at New York Fashion Week to promote Swarovski’s new Crystaldust collection, which features two shimmery bracelet styles—a cuff and a wrap bangle—the latter of which can be transformed into a choker (which Steinfeld, like any self-respecting member of Taylor Swift‘s girl squad, rocks on the regular).

The partnership with the crystal powerhouse has also come in handy when it comes to glitzing up her tour costumes. Now three months in to the tour, she says, “It’s about this time that I need to revamp my stage wardrobe, which I’ve been doing by embellishing everything in my suitcase with Swarovski crystals. T-shirts, jeans, jackets—you name it.” We took the opportunity to grill the actress and singer-on-the-rise on her first celebrity crush, biggest pet peeves, and the first word she associates with Justin Bieber (hopefully Biebs can take the hint!)

Hailee Steinfeld Is Surviving Fashion Week Just Like the Rest of Us – with a Lot of Dry Shampoo

If you blink, you’ll miss Hailee Steinfeld these days – she hit up New York Fashion Week with a stop at the Tom Ford show, she was performing on tour with Meghan Trainor, she squeezed in some time to promote the new Crystaldust collection from Swarovski and somehow made a stop at the Toronto Film Festival. (If that sounds exhausting, you won’t be surprised to see what she’s up to on Monday.) We were able to catch up with her at the Swarovski bash to get her Fashion Week survival tips and hear all about the new jewelry collection.

Steinfeld doesn’t have pierced ears, so the Crystaldust collection is a perfect match for her — they offer two shimmery bracelets perfect for an arm party, which can be transformed into a choker. “I think the fact that you can do either one is amazing because I’m obsessed with chokers,” s he tells PeopleStyle.”When I accessorize I love layering, whether it’s stacked bracelets or rings on every finger or a statement necklace. Not all at once, obviously.”

Will she ever go under the (earring) gun? “I’m so indecisive. I can’t make the decision of whether I want it or not,” she admits. “I think eventually. A lot of the times I come into a store like Swarovski and I’m like, ‘OK, maybe it’s time’ because I see these beautiful earrings and I’m like ‘I need to have these.’”

Hailee’s schedule may be hectic at the moment, but she loves being in the middle of the “madness” of New York Fashion Week. “There’s nothing that you could compare New York Fashion Week to,” she shares. “You’re walking down the street and you see models catching cabs and going from show to show and it’s something you don’t see anywhere else. Then again having the honor to be involved in it and going to shows and meeting designers and seeing the work that goes into a show that lasts minutes is amazing … It’s pretty special.” Continue reading “Hailee Steinfeld Is Surviving Fashion Week Just Like the Rest of Us – with a Lot of Dry Shampoo”

Hailee Steinfeld Says There’s No Difference Between a Squad and a Clique

To commemorate the launch of their new Crystaldust collection, Swarovski recently hosted a meet-and-greet at their Rockefeller Center store with actress/musician Hailee Steinfeld. Hailee is currently in the midst of her first US tour, opening for Meghan Trainor and promoting her debut album Haiz, but she took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to talk to Cosmopolitan.com.

Is there a celebrity whose style you admire?
Rihanna. I love how effortless she is. She can rock anything.

Why do you think she’s able to do that?
She’s Rihanna.

How important are style and fashion to you when you’re like considering dating someone?
I like the person [I’m dating] to look presentable and nice and I wan’t them to be into it. I don’t want it to be a bummer for them to have to get dressed up, you know?

Have you ever ghosted on anyone?
What’s that?

When you don’t want to hang out with someone anymore so you just stop talking to them, or stop texting. You just sort of disappear.
I’ve never heard that! But… Ooh. Yeah. I’ve kind of done that. I mean, come on, everybody’s done that.

Do you still use the word “squad” or has it been ruined for you?
It hasn’t been ruined for me. I don’t use it, though. I feel like it closes off.

Is there difference between a squad and a clique?
I don’t think so.

Have you thought about how vocal you want to be about politics?
Politics is something that that I have my own opinions about and keep to myself.

What is the last thing you put your foot down about professionally?
I guess what I’ve come to realize is that taking time for yourself is completely okay and asking for some space and asking for people to take their phone calls outside the dressing room, and not in it while you’re in there, is okay. I love having everybody together and having that music blasting and everybody smiling. But sometimes you just kind of need to breathe.

Hailee Steinfeld Fangirled Out When She Met Tom Ford

Hailee Steinfeld is one busy 19-year-old. She’s currently on tour with Meghan Trainor, but on Friday morning, she took some time to attend a preview of Swarovski’s new signature Crystaldust collection. The singer-actress came dressed to the theme of the affair, rocking a black sparkly Julien Macdonald jumpsuit, the perfect pairing for the black-and-gray Swarovski Crystaldust bangles she accessorized with. Steinfeld may have been gussied up in designer duds, but much like the rest of us, she also has an obsession with a certain Spanish fast-fashion retailer. “I’m a huge Zara fan. Every stop on the road, I find myself in a Zara, getting something that has me like ‘I can wear this anywhere — possibly onstage as well!’”

But today was all about Swarovski, a company that Steinfeld says she is extremely close to. “I met the Swarovski family when I shot my second film, Romeo and Juliet. They were huge supporters of that film and they helped create the pieces for the film along with the costume designer,” she said. “I met the team, the family, rather, back then, and now I’m back with them here during New York Fashion Week for the launch of the Crystaldust bracelet, which I’m very excited about. ”

These days, it seems like Steinfeld has a lot to be excited about. By the time we chatted, her Fashion Week had already been a memorable experience, thanks to Tom Ford, whose show she attended on Wednesday. Steinfeld got a chance to actually meet the designer backstage after the show, which for her was an “unbelievable” highlight. “I’d just seen the show, so I was high off of the show and the pieces themselves. My level of appreciation for designers and for the amount of work that goes into a show that lasts just minutes is through the roof,” she gushed. “To have met him in general was mind-blowing, and I’m still just getting over it, but directly after the show, he was just so incredible. He was so kind and amazing, and I’m excited to see his film, and I was able to tell him that.” Ford’s fashion show was a celebrity-studded affair indeed, so much so that even a star like Steinfeld couldn’t help but feel a little starstruck at times. “I was at a table with Naomi Campbell, and I was like, ‘This can’t be real!’ She was, like, across from me and I kept making eye contact with her — it was so crazy!” Continue reading “Hailee Steinfeld Fangirled Out When She Met Tom Ford”

Hailee Steinfeld on Touring With Meghan Trainor and Acting Alongside Woody Harrelson

Hailee Steinfeld’s trajectory has not been, to put it mildly, that of your ordinary young Hollywood star. At the age of 13, the actress was chosen (out of a preposterously large pool of 15,000 young women) to play the lead role in the Coen brothers’ film, True Grit, earning an Academy Award nomination for her performance. (She lost out to The Fighter’s Melissa Leo in the best supporting actress category.)

While she has been acting steadily since then, her roles have increasingly taken on a tuneful bent. Steinfeld has appeared in movies like Begin Again (the appealing 2013 musical starring Keira Knightley) and Pitch Perfect 2 (the second film in the juggernaut aca-franchise), as well as the music video for pal Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood.” And this theme coincides with the other major pursuit in Steinfeld’s life: yes, like a millennial Jennifer Lopez, Steinfeld is trying to maintain her acting career while also attempting to achieve pop-music stardom.

Steinfeld, now 19, has released one well-received EP (2015’s Haiz), and is currently opening for Meghan Trainor on a large-scale U.S. tour. She says that the offer to tour with Trainor completely floored her: “The text that came was completely out of the blue, and I was so not expecting it. But when I did [read it], I was like, ‘Oh my god, this is like . . . this has got to be unheard of. I’m so excited; this is so insane.’”

Steinfeld says she had met the 22-year-old Trainor a “couple of times,” and that the singer “[has] just been very, very supportive.” The young multihyphenate—whose mother accompanies her on the road—is clearly still adjusting to the touring musician lifestyle, though, explaining that the “whole tour bus thing” is “not easy.” She adds, “My sleep pattern is so incredibly off, and I don’t know how to correct it.”

Steinfeld—whose most recent single, a collaboration with Zedd titled “Starving,” is currently at No. 53 on the Billboard Hot 100—says this pop lane is one she has long been thrilled to journey down. “[Previously] all I knew was the recording process and the writing process, and I absolutely loved that—and going to the studio, and not having to worry about what you look like or what you’re wearing,” she recounts. “Now, getting the other side of it, I feel like I’m really learning the life of an artist and I’m really obsessed with it and I want to make an album and I want to go on tour and keep doing this.” Steinfeld cites Lopez as a role model, noting her ability to juggle two career paths skillfully. “I saw J. Lo [perform] in Vegas, and her trajectory and where she’s been, how she’s gotten to where she’s at now . . . I’m so incredibly inspired by her. She’s pulled off the acting thing as well as the music thing at the same time, and that’s obviously part of my plan too.” Continue reading “Hailee Steinfeld on Touring With Meghan Trainor and Acting Alongside Woody Harrelson”

Hailee Steinfeld on ‘The Edge of Seventeen’ and its John Hughes ‘vibe’

Hailee Steinfeld, 19, hopes her new movie, “The Edge Of Seventeen,” will accomplish something important: showing teens they’re not alone.

“It’s a very honest telling of being a teenager in this world today and growing up and taking every single flaw there is and embracing them,” Steinfeld told CNN. “It’s a coming of age story for everybody in it.”

Steinfeld plays Nadine, a teen who can’t seem to fit in. It’s your classic narrative, played out in movies countless times before, but Steinfeld is hoping to bring it to a new generation of viewers.

“It’s got a very sort of John ‘Hughes-y’ vibe to it which I’m very excited to sort of give to my generation in a way,” she said.

The film, directed by Kelly Fremon Craig, also stars Woody Harrelson as Steinfeld’s teacher. “I love [Harrelson] so much,” Steinfeld said. “He was great.”

Steinfeld, who was nominated for an Academy Award when she was just 14 for her role in the 2010 film “True Grit,” is already garnering some Oscar buzz for this performance.

“It’s obviously always an honor when people recognize your hard work,” she said. “So I just hope people see this movie and relate to it as much as I did.”

“The Edge Of Seventeen” hits theaters November 18.

Hailee Steinfeld, performing at Allentown Fair, talks about her ‘insane’ music, movie career

If there’s any new artist in show business who’s been blessed with success, it’s Hailee Steinfeld.

As an actress, her first feature role — as Mattie Ross in the 2010 remake of “True Grit” with Jeff Bridges when she was just 14 — got her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

As a singer, her first single, 2015’s soaring pop hit “Love Myself,” sold platinum and has 150 million views on YouTube.

And now, for her first tour, Steinfeld is the supporting act for Meghan Trainor, one of the biggest new pop stars, whose debut album went double platinum and had four Top 15 hits that among them sold 15 million copies.

The tour comes to the Allentown Fairgrounds grandstand Saturday.

“I mean it’s crazy,” Steinfeld, who hasn’t hit her 20th birthday, says in a recent call from the tour in Chicago. “The opportunities that I get and have worked for that have come my way are absolutely insane. And I feel very, very lucky and blessed to have been given these opportunities.”

Of course, talent may have something to do with it. Steinfeld already has another single, the teen romance anthem “Starving” with DJs Zedd and Grey. Released July 22 to coincide with the tour — it already hit the Top 25 on the Mainstream Pop chart and was rising this week.

She has another movie, “Edge of Seventeen,” scheduled for release Sept. 18, that she says has “a very sort of classic John Hughes vibe to it,” referring to the 1980s director of teen classics such as “Sixteen Candles.” Continue reading “Hailee Steinfeld, performing at Allentown Fair, talks about her ‘insane’ music, movie career”

Hailee Steinfeld talks bad haircuts and coming of age in The Edge of Seventeen

“With Woody and I, we had such a great witty banter, just the two of us,” Steinfeld says, laughing. “There’s got to be at least 20 minutes of blooper material of us just breaking. He really is one of the coolest human beings I’ve ever met.”

The Edge of Seventeen (out Nov. 18) finds the 19-year-old Steinfeld in the halls of high school, marking a bit of a departure after hunting down her father’s murderer in True Grit, tackling fierce a capella rivalries in Pitch Perfect 2, and topping the charts with her own pop music career.

Ahead of The Edge of Seventeen’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, we talked to Steinfeld about tackling Craig’s complicated heroine and her own cringe-worthy memories from childhood.

So what was it about Nadine’s story that really hooked you and made you want to be a part of this?
It was the idea that even though I didn’t go to a physical high school — I was homeschooled — I still experienced and have experienced and am experiencing so much of what this character is going through. I think sometimes, I’ve been in situations before where either people my age or people a few years older than me will think that I’ve bypassed all of the high school drama, just because I wasn’t in it. And that’s so untrue. I’ve experienced so many things, just in a different world or on a different level, and I’ve realized that there are things that people experience regardless of who they are or where they’re from or what school they went to, if they went to school. It’s just growing up, and it’s being a teenager, and it’s finding your place in this world. And to be able to express so much of what I’ve gone through, that people thought I hadn’t, through this character, that was what really hooked me.

There’s something so universal about coming-of-age stories. Was there anything specific about Nadine’s story that you really connected with or related to?
I remember there was one party scene, where I walk in, and my brother and my best friend are hitting it off with people, and they’re having a great time. And I’m not having a bad time; I’m just feeling a little awkward and trying to talk myself into not feeling awkward. But for whatever reason, something’s holding me back. And I’ve had so many of those moments, where they’ve taken place on a movie set where everybody kind of has their niche and they’ve found their groove, and I’m like, I don’t know how to make myself not look awkward right now. Because I feel very uncomfortable. I’ve had them at high school parties. I mean, I was in school up until the sixth grade, and I even had them then.
