‘The Edge of Seventeen’
Remember when Hailee Steinfeld made the switch to songstress, and you were like “Yessss, but also nooooo, what about her genius acting?!” Well, she’s back at it in The Edge of Seventeen—a lovely coming of age story about a high schooler who simply cannot when she finds out her best friend is dating her brother. Topics on the table include, friendship, first loves, and forgiveness. And FYI, while this list is more about watchability than awards, Steinfeld’s role has “Oscar” written all over it.

Hailee Steinfeld is picky in “the best way possible” when it comes to selecting film roles.
The 20-year-old actress has just been nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance in The Edge of Seventeen, in which she plays a high school student who must overcome a series of personal obstacles. Prior to this she was nominated for an Academy Award for her supporting part in 2010’s True Grit, proving she has an eye for a successful movie.
“I’m picky in the best way possible,” she smiled to Pop Matters. “I have an amazing team of people who help steer me in the right direction. I’ve had the honour of working with great filmmakers and actors, and when it comes to making a decision in terms of what films I want to do, it comes down to the director and the people involved.”
She still finds the attention surrounding True Grit, which also featured actors such as Matt Damon and Jeff Bridges, “crazy” and admits she never anticipated how things would pan out. Six years later the brunette beauty is continuing to star opposite big names, most recently Woody Harrelson in The Edge of Seventeen.
“His timing is impeccable,” Hailee gushed. “Everything is always on point, which kept me on my toes. It was very exciting, but also terrifying. He challenged me. He’s a great person, has the best sense of humour, and was a delight to work with.”
Next up fans can see her reprise the part of Emily in the third Pitch Perfect instalment, having won audiences over in 2015’s second offering. Hailee keeps her loyal followers up to date via social media, which has become a part of her everyday life.
“After my first movie came out, I got onboard with all of it. It was amazing to see that people had been waiting for me to get on Twitter and Instagram,” she added.
On the heels of her recent Golden Globe nomination, Universal has set a home box-office release date for Hailee Steinfeld’s “The Edge of Seventeen”. The film was produced by Academy Award winner James L. Brooks (Terms of Endearment, “The Simpsons”). “The Edge of Seventeen” even earned a “Certified Fresh” seal on Rotten Tomatoes with a score of 94%.
The comedy stars Academy Award nominees Hailee Steinfeld (Pitch Perfect 2, True Grit) and Woody Harrelson (“True Detective,” The Hunger Games) along with Golden Globe winner Kyra Sedgwick (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Closer”). The Edge of Seventeen Blu-ray, DVD and Digital HD will also offer fans some bonus content, including a gag reel and deleted scenes. The film was written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig.
The STX Entertainment film is nominated for a Golden Globe award for Best Actress (Hailee Steinfeld).
The Edge of Seventeen offers a look at what it’s like to grow up as a young woman today. Nadine (Steinfeld) and Krista (Haley Lu Richardson, “Ravenswood”) are inseparable best friends attempting to navigate high school together. But then Nadine’s world gets turned upside down when she finds out that Krista has been secretly dating her popular older brother (Blake Jenner, “Glee”) behind her back.
Now with her best friend as her worst enemy, Nadine has to deal with being an awkward loner, while discovering that what may feel like the end of the world is really just the beginning of growing up.
The film did very well in theaters, considering it only opened across a limited showing. The Edge of Seventeen pulled-in almost $14M across 1,945 locations, making $4.75M in the film’s opening weekend.
