21 Random Questions for Hailee Steinfeld

If you haven’t gotten Hailee Steinfeld‘s new song, “Starving,” stuck in your head at some point this summer, you must be some kind of wizard. The 19-year-old’s second act as a pop star is going impressively well—she’s touring with Meghan Trainor this summer, performed on “Late Night with Seth Myers” last week, and is making good on the success of her first hit single, “Love Myself.”

Not that any of that has stopped her from pursuing other (occasionally Oscar-nomination-worthy) hobbies like acting and fashion. Her newest movie, “The Edge of Seventeen,” will be released in November, and on Friday, she stepped out at New York Fashion Week to promote Swarovski’s new Crystaldust collection, which features two shimmery bracelet styles—a cuff and a wrap bangle—the latter of which can be transformed into a choker (which Steinfeld, like any self-respecting member of Taylor Swift‘s girl squad, rocks on the regular).

The partnership with the crystal powerhouse has also come in handy when it comes to glitzing up her tour costumes. Now three months in to the tour, she says, “It’s about this time that I need to revamp my stage wardrobe, which I’ve been doing by embellishing everything in my suitcase with Swarovski crystals. T-shirts, jeans, jackets—you name it.” We took the opportunity to grill the actress and singer-on-the-rise on her first celebrity crush, biggest pet peeves, and the first word she associates with Justin Bieber (hopefully Biebs can take the hint!)

Hailee Steinfeld Is Surviving Fashion Week Just Like the Rest of Us – with a Lot of Dry Shampoo

If you blink, you’ll miss Hailee Steinfeld these days – she hit up New York Fashion Week with a stop at the Tom Ford show, she was performing on tour with Meghan Trainor, she squeezed in some time to promote the new Crystaldust collection from Swarovski and somehow made a stop at the Toronto Film Festival. (If that sounds exhausting, you won’t be surprised to see what she’s up to on Monday.) We were able to catch up with her at the Swarovski bash to get her Fashion Week survival tips and hear all about the new jewelry collection.

Steinfeld doesn’t have pierced ears, so the Crystaldust collection is a perfect match for her — they offer two shimmery bracelets perfect for an arm party, which can be transformed into a choker. “I think the fact that you can do either one is amazing because I’m obsessed with chokers,” s he tells PeopleStyle.”When I accessorize I love layering, whether it’s stacked bracelets or rings on every finger or a statement necklace. Not all at once, obviously.”

Will she ever go under the (earring) gun? “I’m so indecisive. I can’t make the decision of whether I want it or not,” she admits. “I think eventually. A lot of the times I come into a store like Swarovski and I’m like, ‘OK, maybe it’s time’ because I see these beautiful earrings and I’m like ‘I need to have these.’”

Hailee’s schedule may be hectic at the moment, but she loves being in the middle of the “madness” of New York Fashion Week. “There’s nothing that you could compare New York Fashion Week to,” she shares. “You’re walking down the street and you see models catching cabs and going from show to show and it’s something you don’t see anywhere else. Then again having the honor to be involved in it and going to shows and meeting designers and seeing the work that goes into a show that lasts minutes is amazing … It’s pretty special.” Continue reading “Hailee Steinfeld Is Surviving Fashion Week Just Like the Rest of Us – with a Lot of Dry Shampoo”

Hailee Steinfeld Says There’s No Difference Between a Squad and a Clique

To commemorate the launch of their new Crystaldust collection, Swarovski recently hosted a meet-and-greet at their Rockefeller Center store with actress/musician Hailee Steinfeld. Hailee is currently in the midst of her first US tour, opening for Meghan Trainor and promoting her debut album Haiz, but she took a few minutes out of her busy schedule to talk to Cosmopolitan.com.

Is there a celebrity whose style you admire?
Rihanna. I love how effortless she is. She can rock anything.

Why do you think she’s able to do that?
She’s Rihanna.

How important are style and fashion to you when you’re like considering dating someone?
I like the person [I’m dating] to look presentable and nice and I wan’t them to be into it. I don’t want it to be a bummer for them to have to get dressed up, you know?

Have you ever ghosted on anyone?
What’s that?

When you don’t want to hang out with someone anymore so you just stop talking to them, or stop texting. You just sort of disappear.
I’ve never heard that! But… Ooh. Yeah. I’ve kind of done that. I mean, come on, everybody’s done that.

Do you still use the word “squad” or has it been ruined for you?
It hasn’t been ruined for me. I don’t use it, though. I feel like it closes off.

Is there difference between a squad and a clique?
I don’t think so.

Have you thought about how vocal you want to be about politics?
Politics is something that that I have my own opinions about and keep to myself.

What is the last thing you put your foot down about professionally?
I guess what I’ve come to realize is that taking time for yourself is completely okay and asking for some space and asking for people to take their phone calls outside the dressing room, and not in it while you’re in there, is okay. I love having everybody together and having that music blasting and everybody smiling. But sometimes you just kind of need to breathe.
