For Style Chameleon Hailee Steinfeld, Fashion Is a ‘Game’

Hailee Steinfeld wears her stardom well.

She’s gone from an Academy Award-nominated actress who broke through in 2010’s True Grit, to a Met Ball red carpet stunner in all-black Vera Wang, to showing off her midriff in a strappy bustier at last weekend’s Wango Tango.

The actress, 20, has been focusing on her music of late, and her style has shifted into edgier territory.

“It’s very different,” the star tells Yahoo Style about dressing for a live show. “I have found that it’s a constant game of experimenting, and that’s one of my favorite parts. I feel like I’ve been able to do that on the red carpets, and now with being able to play with the stage aspect of it all, you can kind of go that extra mile and think about things that you couldn’t necessarily get away with on a red carpet, which I feel like is the best part.”

Steinfeld even teased a bit of side-cleavage and showed major leg in her Balmain gown at Tuesday’s 2017 Billboard Music Awards & ELLE’s Women in Music event at YouTube Space LA. But her fashion is shifting and evolving.

“It’s very influenced by the music, and that is what I’m working on right now and trying to figure out exactly where that is and where I live,” she explains. “Right now I am working with my single “Most Girls,” which really, truly represents you feeling like you could be anything and anyone when you wake up in the morning. So with that song, I’ve been having the best time because I’ve performed in sweatpants, I’ve performed in minidresses and tear-aways. And that song to me represents that exactly — being who you want to be and having the freedom to express yourself.”

One thing she’s also keen on experimenting with is her hair. “I’ve never colored my hair, so that could be something to play around with,” the “Love Myself” singer reveals. “I won’t say no, but I’m not going to say yes,” she jokes, however, of when she’ll break that streak. “It’ll happen, but I don’t know about soon.”

For now Steinfeld will stick to wigs. “I’m obsessed with [them], and I love to have fun with those!” she quips.

And bad news for those of us looking to acquire her luscious locks; Steinfeld’s perfect hair appears to be hereditary. “I do a trim every now and then, but I really don’t do anything crazy,” she says of her hair maintenance routine. “I love a good hair mask every now and then, but that’s it really.”

‘Pitch Perfect’ Cast Heads To Mexico WITHOUT ‘Diva’ Hailee Steinfeld

The Bellas of Pitch Perfect have been soaking up the sun on a margarita-filled Mexican vacation, but there’s one co-star noticeably absent from the all-girl getaway — Hailee Steinfeld. And an insider told RadarOnline.com exclusively that she wasn’t even invited!

“It’s obvious Hailee isn’t there,” said the source of the singer-actress, who plays Emily in the hit film.

“Thing is, almost no one gets along with her.”

The singing squad, including Rebel Wilson, Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow, Anna Camp, Kelley Jakle, Chrissie Fit and Shelley Regner, created a social media frenzy over all their fun poolside pics, with Wilson writing on Instagram “We love each other so much, we had to go on holiday.”

But there hasn’t been any love lost for Steinfeld.

“She’s a diva disaster,” said the source. “They have tried to give her chances, but can’t stand her.”

The film recently wrapped, so to celebrate, the girls decided to take a break with a bonding trip to Mexico. And the insider said that although Steinfeld “will probably say she had other commitments,” she wasn’t invited.

Said the source, “They thought she’d ruin the trip, so they just kept her out.”

Hailee Steinfeld Shares How She Learned to Embrace Her Height

Hailee Steinfeld loves a good mini moment. The star often shows off her 5’8″ figure in super leggy looks on the red carpet, and she knows how to strike the Jennifer Lopez leg pose almost better than JLo. But Steinfeld revealed that she wasn’t always confident being the tallest girl when she was growing up.

“In school, I was always taller than everybody else and I didn’t necessarily love it. I felt like it made me stand out in a way I didn’t want to stand out in,” she told PEOPLE at the Billboard Music Awards and Elle magazine’s Women in Music event in Los Angeles.

Now, as Steinfeld’s blossomed into a red carpet style star (thanks to the help of her stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn), she’s started embracing her height — and sometimes even wishes she was taller.

“Now I can appreciate it. I feel really comfortable showing off my legs,” she told us. “I love myself for that. Sometimes I wish I could be taller. Thank God for heels because we can do that!”

Last night, the singer did just that, sporting a leg-baring black Balmain gown with high Christian Louboutin pumps to amp up her height, before switching into a crop top and pants for a performance during the award show.

At the MTV Movie Awards earlier this month she opted for another mini moment, putting her legs on display in a lavender Fausto Puglisi mini dress teamed with metallic heels.

Steinfeld said that her fashion transformation is influenced heavily by her music.

“With my single, ‘Most Girls,’ that song is about waking up and being whoever you want to be whenever you want to be that,” Steinfeld said. “With that song, I’ve had the most fun performing in sweatpants to mini dresses to jeans and a tank top.”

And the style chameleon definitely can pull off all looks.
