Hailee Steinfeld Talks Working With Prive & Musical Evolution Since ‘Love Myself’: ‘It Helped Me Get Through A Lot’

At age 20, Hailee Steinfeld has taken her first equity stake in a company: Privé Revaux. A direct-to-consumer eyewear company, Steinfeld joins Jamie Foxx, Ashley Benson and Jeremy Piven as partners in Privé. Tapped by founder David Schottenstein, the four celebs have marketed the sunglasses, which retail for $29.95, via their social channels and will join in the design of future collections.

Privé has already got a built-in network of famous fans, from Blake Lively to Lilly Collins and Halsey. In addition to selling direct, Privé also coupled with Amazon to immediately scale, selling its approximately 115 styles via the internet giant.

Steinfeld, who was nominated for an Oscar at age 13 and released her first EP at age 18, is flushed with emotion as she talks with Billboard about the company, her music and her entrée into the Transformers universe in the 2018 release of Bumblebee.

So Bumblebee is happening. What can you tell us about the film?
It’s a prequel and I’m excited about it.

This is animator Travis Knight’s first live action film, and you’ve mentioned that you’re going to be shooting and working on music simultaneously.
Yes, and working with Privé.

Speaking of which, you’ve got capital in Privé. It’s not just a coloration, you’re not simply endorsing. Why did you choose to invest in the company?
There are so many things about this brand and the people involved in this brand that I wanted to have part of. I love that it is accessible to anyone and everyone around the world. I feel like I can wear these sunglasses and feel just as great as when I’m wearing a pair that are five times the price. And when I’m onstage at a concert in middle America, I can offer them to the people in front of me. I feel like style isn’t necessarily dependent on luxury prices, it’s how you feel and how you rock it that makes the outfit.

How did you decide Privé was the company for you?
Honestly, the people involved and the brand itself. As part of it, I represent the versatility and the accessibility that anyone can be whoever they want on any given day, and that to me is so important.

You came from acting, which lead you to music after your role in Pitch Perfect 2. Does that mean you may now become a serial entrepreneur?
It’s so funny to me how obviously different acting and music are, and yet how similar they are. With music, everything happens so fast. A song turns into an album before you know it and you’re touring worldwide. A movie can take months to years to make; right now I’m in between all that. I’ve got my single “Most Girls” out, and I’m working on my next single, which does not have a title [yet]. But it should be out very soon.

How have you evolved as a recording artist?
In the short time I’ve been doing this, I feel like I’ve changed a lot. My first single, “Love Myself”, was the perfect song — not only because it ended up connecting me with so many of my fans who shared the same message I do, but because it was a message I could transition into music, and it helped me get through a lot.

Now I feel like I’m just getting started, and 10 years from now I will still feel like I am just getting started. This is me and this is where I stand and what I want to do. I’m very excited for everybody to hear what’s coming, because even that is very different from what I’m doing now. It’s a constant evolution.
