International Jetsetter Hailee Steinfeld Reveals Her Top Travel Tips

Around this time of year, most 20 year-olds are gearing up for spring break. Hailee Steinfeld, however, is not a typical 20 year-old. While many of her peers are taking off to Mexico, the multi-hyphenate star is in the midst of filming Pitch Perfect 3, and balancing her pop music career. Should she ever need a beach vacation–or rather, have time for one–the actress is not lacking in the proper footwear department: Steinfeld was just named the face of REEF sandals. Here, the actress and singer shares her top warm weather travel tips, as well has her upcoming summer plans, and the eternal debate of to Coachella or not to Coachella.

What is your favorite warm weather vacation destination?
I was recently in Barbados for a job and I definitely hope to go back soon. The weather was perfect, the people were inviting, and the food was amazing.

What is your favorite mode of travel?
I happen to love driving. There’s something about hopping in your car that gives off a choose your own adventure vibe. It’s more on your own terms than other forms of transportation and I love an opportunity to be spontaneous. I do also love flying because I can catch up on movies and sleep.

Who is the best person you’ve ever been seated next to on a plane?
I love sitting next to my mom whenever I’m traveling. We laugh ourselves to sleep pretty much every flight.

What do you always pack for a day at the beach?
My headphones, a gigantic bottle of water, plenty of sunscreen, a comfy blanket, and my REEF Escapes.

What is your current beach read?
I wish I could say I was currently reading a book but I find that when I do have downtime to read, I’m catching up on scripts or reading the latest breaking news online.

Are you planning to attend any musical festivals this season?
I hope to be attending Coachella this year but it will all depend on my work schedule. I remain hopeful because some of my favorite acts are performing…

What is your favorite place you’ve ever traveled?
There are too many to choose. Paris and Tokyo both have special places in my heart for different reasons but I also know there are so many places I haven’t even yet gotten to visit. I’m so lucky that my job takes me all over the world. It’s surreal.

What is on the top of your vacation bucket list?
Great question. I’m currently trying to figure out where my next vacation will be. Tulum seems to keep resurfacing…

What is the best souvenir you’ve ever picked up on a trip?
I can’t pinpoint just one. Whenever I’m visiting a new place I always try to grab something that will always remind me of the trip. I’ve got a great collection of memories that includes even the smallest items like match books or postcards. Continue reading “International Jetsetter Hailee Steinfeld Reveals Her Top Travel Tips”

Hailee Steinfeld on ‘Pitch Perfect 3’: ‘It’s Going to be a Good One’

“Pitch Perfect 3” is actress Hailee Steinfeld’s latest project and probably one of her tickets to her current popularity. In the musical film, she portrays Emily Junk, the daughter of a former Bella, Katherine Junk, making her a “Legacy Bella.”

During her recent visit to New York, the 20-year-old American actress opened up about her wardrobe for the upcoming “Pitch Perfect 3.” Speaking to FN, Steinfeld said her character has changed and developed in two years’ time.

“We’ve had a great time finding her [Emily Junk] cool and her style, even though it’s a little quirky,” Steinfeld said. “[Emily] is still the young, fresh one in the group, and you can see that especially in her clothes.”

In a separate interview, Hailee Steinfeld also shared what viewers can expect from “Pitch Perfect 3.” Aside from the wide range of acapella, the highly anticipated sequel will also feature tons of dance moves.

“I’m in the middle of it now and it’s going great,” Steinfeld told The Daily Front Row. “We’re at the halfway mark now and it’s awesome. The choreography is amazing. The music is so fun and it’s a great storyline. It’s going to be a good one!”

“Pitch Perfect 3” will see Anna Kendrick as Beca Mitchell, Mitchell Rebel Wilson as Patricia “Fat Amy, Hailee Steinfeld as Emily Junk, Brittany Snow as Chloe Beale, Elizabeth Banks as Gail John and Michael Higgins as John Smith. The upcoming sequel will also see rapper Trinidad James as an individual from a contending singing group and “The Accountant” actor John Lithgow in a top-secret role.

Directed by Trish Sie, “Pitch Perfect 3” is scheduled to be released on Dec. 22.

Hailee Steinfeld Will Defend Flip-Flops to the Death

She may only be 20 years old, but Hailee Steinfeld already has an Oscar nomination (for her breakout role in 2010’s True Grit), a Golden Globe nod (for last year’s Edge of Seventeen), and a pair of platinum pop singles (“Love Myself” and “Starving”) under her belt. Add to that her key role in the lucrative Pitch Perfect franchise — the third flick hits theaters this December — and it’s a wonder the born-and-bred California girl has any time to just, well, chill.

Luckily, her new role as an ambassador for the sandal brand Reef is giving her a chance to kick off her heels and slip into something a little more comfortable. Below, Steinfeld defends fashion’s most divisive footwear style, discusses how her music influences her style, and waxes poetic about the good old-fashioned American shopping mall.

So Hailee, we talk about flip-flops a lot at Racked. And I hate to say it, but a lot of folks don’t care for them. Why are you such a fan?
Honestly, they’re just without a doubt the most comfortable shoe. I’m currently in Atlanta making Pitch Perfect 3, and I think I’ve got about four pairs in my trailer at the moment, plus another pair in the pocket of my set chair. When I’m going to and from hair and makeup, they’re all I wear.

I feel like my connection to them stems from growing up in California — and Reef has always been my go-to, I’ve known the brand for as long as I can remember. In my house, we keep this big pile of shoes at the bottom of the staircase, right by our front door. There are always a bunch of flip-flops in there, and they’re always the ones I reach for when I’m running out of the house.

I’ve noticed that your style shifts depending on whether you’re promoting your movies or your music; you’ll wear fishnets and crop tops for performances, but go super-feminine and almost demure for certain red carpets.
Yes! That’s a very conscious decision, and there’s a lot of freedom in being able to discover what I’m most comfortable in when it comes to both spaces. I’m having a lot of fun with it. But yeah, being onstage is very different from walking the red carpet at a movie premiere in some beautiful, amazing creation.

I feel like my stage attire is an amplified version of my personal style. It’s fun to go that extra mile. With [my costumes], the music itself 100 percent dictates what the vibe and the look is — and that’s changing! And with that, the wardrobe will change.

Sounds like we can expect some new music from you soon… ?
Very, very soon! I’m so incredibly excited to release what I’ve been working on for so long. And yes, the crazy thing about it is that it’s constantly evolving; just when I think it’s ready and I have it, I find something I want to change. Hailee Steinfeld on Her Oscars Dress Malfunction: ‘It Was a Nightmare!’

Hailee Steinfeld definitely had a Cinderella moment at the Academy Awards a few weeks ago, as she glided down the biggest red carpet of the year in a gorgeous hand-painted floral Ralph & Russo couture creation. But all wasn’t as it seemed, she later admits, as she suffered a minor wardrobe malfunction before she even entered the theater.

“The dress was so beautiful and so delicate,” she tells PeopleStyle over the weekend in New York City, where she was celebrating her new campaign for the surf brand Reef. “Putting that dress on, I was like, I don’t want to move. But [my stylists] Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn were like, ‘Just relax. Have fun. Just kill it.’ When I got on red carpet, there was a tiny little tear in the dress. And I’m like, ‘It’s too delicate for me!’”

We told her we couldn’t see it. “I know, good, thanks,” she says. “But if you go look, you’ll see it.”

Behold, she was right (look just above her waist, on her left side):

The tear “was getting bigger and bigger as I went down the carpet, because anytime anyone stepped on the train, it would just rip more and more,” she tells us. “There was a point where I was awkwardly holding my hand to try and hide it as it was getting bigger.”

Further proof:

It was a catastrophe, she says, especially because she knew she had to get on stage to present Best Animated Feature Film alongside Gael Garcia Bernal during the live show.

“I ran to this wonderful woman who was backstage in the wardrobe department,” says Steinfeld. “Basically, she cut a piece off the back of the dress and sewed it on to the front of the dress to make it look like it was just part of the dress. By the time I presented you couldn’t tell. It was a nightmare. It’s stressful and the clock’s ticking and everybody’s running around. It was a lot.”

But she didn’t let a tiny thing like that get in the way of her having a great night. “I was really honored to wear this,” she says. “It was so gorgeous.”

Later, she attended the Vanity Fair after-party in an equally dazzling design, also by Ralph & Russo. This one was even more fragile—it featured over 145,000 crystals and sequins hand-embroidered onto it “and the sheer lining was dyed to match her skin, so the dress looked extra-delicate,” Tamara Ralph, who designed the gown alongside her partner Michael Russo, tells PeopleStyle. “This one took about four months to make with all the embroidery work.”

“It weighed so much,” says Steinfeld. “It felt like you were carrying something, and it changes your posture and changes the way you walk and the way you feel.”

As for any malfunctions, she said didn’t have another “nightmare” that night. Luckily!

Hailee Steinfeld on New Music, Pitch Perfect 3, and Her Reef Escape Campaign

It’s challenging to even think about wearing sandals in NYC, considering the impending #snowpocalypse, but fashion darling and singer-actress Hailee Steinfeld is changing our tune. The 20-year-old beauty was in town over the weekend to promote her new Reef Escape campaign. In addition to talking happy feet, the Cali girl opened up to us about life in the spotlight, new projects—music and acting—and why posing with a parrot is no easy feat!

You’re a California girl fronting a California brand—did it feel natural to sign on with Reef?
Definitely! It’s a brand that I’ve had a lifelong connection with—it’s so timeless. I was born and raised in California and live 25 minutes away from the beach, so Reef has always been my go-to sandal.

What was growing up in the spotlight like?
It’s crazy because I’m just getting started, but at the same time I’ve been doing this for half my life. I grew up in a town outside of everything, in a quiet neighborhood with a bunch of families. I went to school up until 6th grade, and then I started homeschooling. I still live at home.

Do you remember your first audition?
I have countless audition stories, but I guess it was really a series, and still is a series, of small victories. I started my first [modeling] jobs in print and then commercials and then I had guest-starring roles on sitcoms and student thesis graduate films. Every one of those moments felt like something big was happening and it’s crazy to think that was over 10 years ago now. All of those little steps are a key to my success today.

You’re holding a parrot in one of the Reef campaign images. Scary?
Slightly terrifying, but also very exciting. That parrot was amazing and very heavy…it was very weird. I had never held a bird like that before. But it was so cool and very well-trained. It would dance when it was told to dance!

Where is your favorite beach in the world?
I was recently in the Bahamas in Nassau, which was so so gorgeous. It really felt like my first legitimate vacation—I turned my phone off and was on the beach for hours. But living so close to Malibu and being able to drive down to Point Dume or Zuma is a dream.

Many have listed you as “Best Dressed” at the Oscars.
It was absolutely amazing. Going to the Oscars for a second time six years later alone was beyond surreal. Being there in a gown that literally made me feel 10 times more of a princess than I felt the first time when I was 14 in the most gorgeous custom Marchesa princess gown was amazing.

Hailee Steinfeld Didn’t Want to Star in a “Teen Movie,” But Made an Exception for The Edge of Seventeen

Hailee Steinfeld is an old soul. The actress is only 20 years old, but she has already worked alongside actors like Jeff Bridges and Mark Ruffalo. She’s also a fan of movies from the ’70s, thanks to mentors like Catherine Keener and her mother, and she was nominated for an Academy Award for her breakout role in True Grit, the 2010 film directed by the Coen brothers, who cast Steinfeld for the part when she was only 13 years old. She has also been the face of Miu Miu, starred in fan-favorite films like Pitch Perfect 2, and launched a pop music career with hits like “Love Myself.”

It goes without saying, but she’s not your average teenager. So when a film titled “Besties” hit her agent’s desk, she backed away. “I remember hearing about this and feeling like oh God, I’m going to be 19, I’m going to be 20 soon. I don’t want to backpedal in any way. I don’t want to do a teen movie,” she says. “When I gave it the time of day and read the script, it changed my life.” The film was later titled The Edge of Seventeen, and Steinfeld ultimately earned a Golden Globe nomination for her role in 2016. “It’s a movie about what being a teenager really feels like today,” she explains.

What was the first movie you auditioned for?
Oh my gosh. Well, the first movie I auditioned for and got was True Grit. The first movie I ever auditioned for? I should remember this, but I don’t. There were a lot.

How old were you when you started trying to act professionally?
I was eight years old when I started taking acting classes, when I started studying acting. Um, I got an agent at around nine. That was a print agent, actually. I worked print-wise for a year before I started. I think I got my first job when I was ten or 11.

What was it?
My first acting job was a guest-starring role in a sitcom called Back to You. I played a weather girl. I don’t even know that I had a name. I was the weather girl. Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton. It was a fun one.

When you were a kid and you were auditioning, did you have an audition outfit?
No, but I had a lucky flannel that I still have. It’s so funny because that was a thing for a while, that I would always either take with me or wear. And I remember I had one audition where the description of the character was, like, full-on Goth girl, heavy makeup, all black, black nails, everything. And, I was interested in the part and I went to my mom and I was like, you’ve got to help me with this. And it was the first time I, like, had makeup on. And I remember looking at myself in the mirror and I did not like what I saw. I didn’t even recognize myself. And it completely affected my performance. And I them remember when I got called in for True Grit, I initially was like, this feels like the jeans and a flannel type vibe because she rides horses and she’s got two braids and, like, whatever. And I was like, I can do this without the lucky flannel. My mom sewed a burlap skirt the night before. I got one of her old shirts. I don’t even know where it was from, but it looks like it’s from a thrift store. And I wore that and did the audition. Confidently, without the lucky flannel. And I got it.
